#NOtivation: What do you look for in Gym?

I have been trying to blog on my iPhone, but who knew it is so difficult. If anyone out there can give me any tips on how to make blogging on an iPhone that would be wonderful. Since I have been waking up every morning at 6:00am. Joe I decided it would be a good idea to go to Starbucks, enjoy a coffee and write some blog posts. Since it is Tuesday I wanted to start with #NOtivation and link up with Mal from Mal Smiles and Hallie from LIfe: Oceanside!

Mal Smiles

I feel like every time I start to get in a groove with my workouts, something comes up. A few months ago it was my eye surgery and now it is the move.  It really sucks when you find a place that you love to workout at and then you have to move. I was really enjoying my routine of running with my sis, going to Zumba with Ana, and going to a gym by myself. But now, I find myself in Colorado with little to no friends and a lot of time on my hands(at least until next Monday, when I start work) and my Disneyland 1/2 Marathon is 25 days away! I have not ran in almost 2 weeks...well I did run on Sunday and failed. The weather was pretty bad here all weekend and I only ran 3 miles.

So today, I am going to find a cure for my #NOtivation. I am going to find a gym. Hopefully one that I love. I have an appointment at a HUGE gym that is less then 10 minutes away from my house and as a bonus, they also have locations in Denver, close to work. I am also going to stop by a new chain of smaller gyms that, according to Joe, have been getting some news coverage. This smaller gym is really close to my house, less then 5 mins away, but I have a feeling lacks some amenities that I am use to. So what do I look for when it comes to a gym?

Is it clean?
Something about gyms creep me out. Ok, I know exactly what it is...it's the sweat that is dripping off of the careless people at the gym who don't have the decency to clean up after they have worked out. When I lift, I tend to where pants and shirts with sleeves on. I wish I could lift in shorts and a tank, but my fear of getting ring worm will always be in the back of my mind.

Is it open 24 hours?
Or pretty close to 24 hours. My last gym wasn't open 24 hours a day, but they were open until midnight most nights and opened at 4:00a.m. Nothing is worse then getting in a "late" workout at 9:30 at night to only find out that the gym closes at 10! True story.

Is it busy?
I always like to go see gyms when I think it would be busiest. This will give me an idea of what it might look like on the busiest night of the week. I have found that it is always seems to be Monday or Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 in the evening. Nothing is worse then waiting to use a machine.

Does the equipment work?
or better yet, is it put way and easy to access. My last gym recently went through a complete makeover, it wasn't bad to begin with, but there were a few machines that where constantly broken. Another pet peeve of mine is when you can't find the weights that you need. Is it that hard to put them away?

What are the gym goers like?
This one will always be a personal preference and something that may or may not deter you from a gym. I feel like there is always the standard guys that grunt, lift huge weights, and are checking them selves out in the mirror and their counter parts; the girls that look like they are going out to a club, with perfect hair and makeup on. I just like to see a mix of people and I don't want to feel uncomfortable when I go to the gym.

What do you look for when you are looking for a gym?

Do you prefer big gyms or small gyms?

  1. Download the apps BlogGo and Bloglovin! They're lifesavers :)

Finding motivation is the hardest part for me! I can't justify joining a gym until I've actually made and stuck to a routine for a while. I'm hoping to accomplish that by the end of September so that I can join one in October before it starts to snow here in MI!

  2. I totally perfer small gyms. I used to go to a 24 hour gym and I would go at like 11 at night when NO one was there. I loved being able to use any machine I want, and do so without feeling like I was being watched or "sized up"

I was actually in the best shape ever when I went to that gym, maybe I need to switch back! ;)

thanks for linking up with us girl!

  3. Great list! I am totally intimidated by "big" gyms.

On another note, my husband and I just got back from our honeymoon in Colorado Springs, CO, and the altitude kicked our butts. I caught myself feeling winded after very short amounts of time because the air is so thin. I hope the altitude change doesn't interfere with your training for the marathon!
